This variety of Altocumulus describes the dense Ac through which the position of the sun or the moon cannot be revealed (see “Opacus” for the definition). Ac op usually occurs as a variety of Ac stratiformis. When the cloud appears, it often takes the form of large-scale cloud fields that are sometimes immediately noticeable.
When Ac stratiformis opacus appears in the sky, this can occur, for example, through the thickening of Ac translucidus, as shown here:
However, there are also very frequent cases in which Altocumulus opacus appears as an abrupt wall of clouds, as is often the case at the leading edge of a weaker approaching frontal system:
Nimbostratus umgewandelt:
But also at the edge of (clearing) frontal systems, Ac stratiformis opacus can sometimes be seen as a sharply defined wall of clouds, often transformed from Altostratus resp. Nimbostratus:
In all these cases, Ac opacus can usually be identified unambiguously. However, sometimes identifying this cloud is not so obvious. This is especially the case when Ac op appears together with Altostratus or Nimbostratus, as it often occurs, for example, in extensive fields associated with frontal or thunderstorm systems. In such cases, the Altocumulus can sometimes be difficult to distinguish from Altostratus or Nimbostratus, and there is a risk of confusion. In the following image, Ac op can be identified by its lumpy, textured underside, a feature not found in As or Ns.
Umwandlung aus Altostratus bzw. Nimbostratus /
Transformation from Altostratus resp. Nimbostratus
Classifying an Altocumulus opacus is particularly difficult during the transition phase from Altostratus or Nimbostratus. In such cases, the precipitation falling from the base of Altostratus opacus or Nimbostratus develops into streaky structures. After some time (often hours), these structures transform into a typical Altocumulus opacus (this is Altocumulus altostratomutatus or Altocumulus nimbostratomutatus—though strictly speaking, if the parent clouds (Altostratus or Nimbostratus) still persist, it would be classified as Ac altostratogenitus or Ac nimbostratogenitus, categories not provided for in the standard cloud classification).
As long as streaky, indistinct structures dominate, the cloud is classified as Altostratus or Nimbostratus. Once the base of the cloud layer appears structured, "lumpy," or sometimes wavy, it is identified as an Altocumulus. During this transition phase, forms clearly resembling Asperitas also frequently appear. These cloud formations occur several times a year, typically when a large area of precipitation moves away and the weather gradually improves in cooler air:
At times, Ac opacus also resembles other clouds—particularly Stratocumulus—as seen here:
When Altocumulus stratiformis opacus occurs, other varieties of Altocumulus may also be observed at the same time.
Between the individual cloud elements of an otherwise opaque Ac, patches of blue sky, the sun, or other cloud layers are sometimes visible (variety Perlucidus; thus it is Ac stratiformis opacus perlucidus (see also Altocumulus perlucidus):
Ac opacus also frequently exhibits wave-like forms (variety Undulatus), as can be seen in the next image. This is an Ac stratiformis opacus undulatus (see also Altocumulus undulatus):
The Ac field, or parts of it, can also develop a radiating structure, resulting in Altocumulus opacus radiatus. This occurs particularly often when Ac opacus marks the leading edge of an approaching frontal system…
Gewitterregionen:
However, forms of Radiatus sometimes also appear distinctive within a solid layer of Ac opacus, as seen in the following image. Such a constellation occurs primarily with large-scale precipitation areas or thunderstorm regions:
The variety Duplicatus is very frequently observed with Altocumulus opacus; this can be attributed to the diverse lifting processes occurring at the Ac-level in the vicinity of frontal systems or thunderstorm areas. The following images show Ac opacus duplicatus (see also Altocumulus duplicatus):
It is not uncommon for different types of Ac to occur simultaneously, as shown in the following image:
With these sky views, the transition from Ac opacus duplicatus to a Chaotic sky is gradual.
Altocumulus opacus – charakteristische Eigenschaften /
Altocumulus opacus - characteristic properties
Incidentally, a characteristic feature of Altocumulus opacus duplicatus is that the underside of the lowest Ac-layer sometimes takes on a dark, smooth, and undulating appearance. This occurs particularly during the warm season in association with frontal systems and thunderstorm systems—and may play a role in the development of Altocumulus asperitas (see also below):
Incidentally, here is another characteristic image of the underside of Altocumulus opacus:
Such a finely structured underside, at times undulating and lumpy, occurs only with Ac opacus and can serve as a reliable distinguishing feature from Altostratus or Stratocumulus.
The variety Lacunosus of Ac appears predominantly in the variety of Ac translucidus (see entry). While it can occur in combination with developing Ac opacus—as seen in the following image, where it is classified as Ac opacus lacunosus—within the actual area of the cloud where the gaps and holes are found, the Ac generally remains thin…
…and only in very rare cases does Altocumulus lacunosus occur within continuously opaque layers of Ac opacus, as seen in the following image:
Due to the greater thickness, the dissipation of the cloud cover within the Altocumulus opacus manifests itself here as brighter patches rather than actual holes, creating a distinctive honeycomb structure characteristic of this rare form of Altocumulus opacus lacunosus.
At times, precipitation also falls from Ac opacus, though it generally does not reach the ground (Virga). However, the occurrence of precipitation trails is significantly less frequent with Ac stratiformis opacus than with the virga phenomena associated with Ac floccus.
In some cases, the supplementary form Mamma also develops with Altocumulus opacus, as shown below. See also the information under Altocumulus mamma:
Altocumulus opacus – Sonstiges /
Altocumulus opacus - Miscellaneous
For other species of Ac, the term 'Opacus' is used only to a limited extent—for instance, with Ac lenticularis—specifically when referring to thicker forms of this lens-shaped Ac through which the position of sun or moon cannot be revealed, as seen here:
“Opacus” weggelassen.
In most cases, however, isolated Ac lenticularis clouds appear in the variety Translucidus. Because the thickness—and thus the light transmissibility—of such isolated clouds (away from the sun or the moon) cannot be determined with certainty, the designations 'Translucidus' or 'Opacus' are omitted in these instances.
For Ac floccus or Ac castellanus, the term 'Opacus' is not used—due to the cloud's cumuliform nature and its often isolated occurrence—except, at most, when Ac flo or Ac cas appear in extended layers.
In some cases, features of Asperitas can also develop on the underside of Altocumulus opacus. This turbulent, rough, and disordered structure on the underside of relatively dense, continuous layers of Altocumulus opacus (as well as Altocumulus castellanus and potentially Altocumulus floccus) has been recognized as a new supplementary feature of Altocumulus in the cloud classification since 2017. Unlike a 'normal' Altocumulus undulatus, Altocumulus asperitas appears more disordered and chaotic; it notably resembles a rough sea surface viewed from below. The following image shows a typical Altocumulus opacus asperitas:
With the appearance of the various forms of Ac opacus, a change in local weather conditions is to be expected in most cases.
